Passive verbs with 受

Use 受 to express passive meaning, like 'to be …ed'. The pattern is 受 + (doer) + verb. It is common in formal or written contexts and often used with specific two-character verbs.

Structure

Subj. + 受 + (Agent) + Verb
The agent (doer) can be omitted, as in 受欢迎 (to be welcomed).

Examples

  • 张老师的课很受学生的欢迎。
    Zhāng Lǎoshī de kè hěn shòu xuéshēng de huānyíng .
    Teacher Zhang's lessons are welcomed by the students.
  • 一个人不一定要变得很有钱或者很成功才会受人尊重。
    Yī gè rén bù yīdìng yào biàn de hěn yǒu qián huòzhě hěn chénggōng cái huì shòu rén zūnzhòng .
