Making judgments with 算

算 means 'to be considered as' or 'to count as'. Use the structure 'Subj. + 算 + Noun' to judge whether someone or something belongs to a category. Negate with '不 + 算', and form yes-no questions with '算不算'.

  • 天才。
    Tā suàn tiāncái.
    She is considered a genius.
  • 秘密吗?
    Zhè suàn mìmì ma?
    Is this considered a secret?
  • 算不算你女朋友?
    Tā suàn bu suàn nǐ nǚpéngyou?
    Can she be considered your girlfriend or not?
  • 美国的中国菜中国菜吗?
    Měiguó de Zhōngguó cài suàn Zhōngguó cài ma?
    Can American Chinese food be considered Chinese food?
  • 我们认识,但是不算朋友。
    Wǒmen rènshi, dànshì bù suàn péngyou.
    We know each other, but can't be considered friends.
