Making judgments with 算
算 means 'to be considered as' or 'to count as'. Use the structure 'Subj. + 算 + Noun' to judge whether someone or something belongs to a category. Negate with '不 + 算', and form yes-no questions with '算不算'.

Examples
- 她算天才。Tā suàn tiāncái.She is considered a genius.
- 这算秘密吗？Zhè suàn mìmì ma?Is this considered a secret?
- 她算不算你女朋友？Tā suàn bu suàn nǐ nǚpéngyou?Can she be considered your girlfriend or not?
- 美国的中国菜算中国菜吗？Měiguó de Zhōngguó cài suàn Zhōngguó cài ma?Can American Chinese food be considered Chinese food?
- 我们认识，但是不算朋友。Wǒmen rènshi, dànshì bù suàn péngyou.We know each other, but can't be considered friends.
