Indicating Sequence with 接着

接着 is an adverb meaning “then” or “next,” used to show that one action follows another in sequence.

It can also be used as a verb meaning “to catch and hold on” to something thrown or handed to you.

Structure

接着 + Verb / Verb Phrase
Used as an adverb at the start or middle of a clause to show the next action.
Subject + 接着 + Object
Used as a verb meaning to catch and hold something.

Examples

  • 他吃完饭,接着去图书馆学习。
    Tā chī wán fàn, jiē zhe qù tú shū guǎn xué xí.
    After he finished eating, he then went to the library to study.
  • 老师讲完语法,接着让我们做练习。
    Lǎo shī jiǎng wán yǔ fǎ, jiē zhe ràng wǒ men zuò liàn xí.
    After the teacher explained the grammar, she then had us do exercises.
  • 我说完以后,请你接着说。
    Wǒ shuō wán yǐ hòu, qǐng nǐ jiē zhe shuō.
    After I finish speaking, please go on / say what comes next.
  • 他把球扔给我,我马上接着了。
    Tā bǎ qiú rēng gěi wǒ, wǒ mǎ shàng jiē zhe le.
    He threw the ball to me, and I caught it right away.
  • 这本书你看完了,接着给我看。
    Zhè běn shū nǐ kàn wán le, jiē zhe gěi wǒ kàn.
    When you finish reading this book, hand it on to me next.
