Expressing "toward" with 往

Use 往 (wǎng) before a direction word (e.g., 前, 左, 东) or a place word to indicate the direction of an action. The verb always follows the 往 phrase (e.g., 往前走).

Examples

  • 一直前走。
    Yīzhí wǎng qián zǒu .
    Go straight ahead.
  • 左拐。
    Wǎng zuǒ guǎi .
    Turn left.
  • 那个小偷东跑了。
    Nàge xiǎotōu wǎng dōng pǎo le.
    That thief ran towards the east.
  • 不要楼下扔垃圾。
    Bùyào wǎng lóuxià rēng lājī.
    Don't throw trash downstairs.
  • 不要小孩嘴巴里塞东西了!
    Bùyào wǎng xiǎohái zuǐba lǐ sāi dōngxi le!
    Stop stuffing food in the kid's mouth!
