Expressing "need not" with 不必
不必 is used to tell someone they do not need to do something, similar to "don't have to" in English.
It can also mean "not necessarily," indicating that something is not required or not always the case.
Structure
不必 + Verb / Verb Phrase
Used to tell someone an action is not required.
Subject + 不必 + ……
Used to mean "not necessarily," softening or negating a general assumption.
Examples
- 你不必等我,先走一步吧。Nǐ bú bì děng wǒ, xiān zǒu yí bù ba.You don't have to wait for me; you can go ahead first.
- 不必担心,一切都会好起来的。Bú bì dān xīn, yí qiè dōu huì hǎo qǐ lái de.No need to worry; everything will be fine.
- 这周末不必去上课,我们放假。Zhè zhōu mò bú bì qù shàng kè, wǒ men fàng jià.We don't have to go to class this weekend — we're on break.
- 他说的话不必当真。Tā shuō de huà bú bì dàng zhēn.What he said doesn't have to be taken seriously.
- 价钱高不一定代表质量好,便宜的也不必是假货。Jià qián gāo bù yí dìng dài biǎo zhì liàng hǎo, pián yi de yě bú bì shì jiǎ huò.A high price doesn't necessarily mean good quality, and cheap things don't have to be fake.
