Expressing "it seems" with 好像

Use 好像 to express that something appears to be the case. It can be placed after the subject or at the very beginning of the sentence. The structure works with verbs, adjectives, and nouns.

Structure

Subj. + 好像 + ...
好像 + ...
used without a subject when the context makes it clear

Examples

  • 好像是英国人。
    Tā hǎoxiàng shì Yīngguó rén.
    He seems to be British.
  • 好像生病了。
    Tā hǎoxiàng shēngbìng le.
    It seems like she's sick.
  • 好像很不喜欢她。
    Nǐ hǎoxiàng hěn bù xǐhuan tā.
    It seems that you dislike her a lot.
  • 好像不行。
    Hǎoxiàng bù xíng.
    It seems like it didn't work.
  • 好像有人敲门。
    Hǎoxiàng yǒu rén qiāo mén.
    It seems that someone is knocking at the door.
