Expressing "hard to avoid" with 难免

难免 means 'hard to avoid' or 'inevitable.' It is placed before a verb phrase to indicate that something is bound to happen. Often, 会 (will) is added before the verb, though it can be omitted. Do not use 避免 (to avoid) after 难免—the meaning of 'unavoidable' is already contained in the word.

Structure

Subj. + 难免 + Verb Phrase
会 is often added before the verb phrase; it is optional.

  • 刚开始说外语时难免会有一些误会。
    Gāng kāishǐ shuō wàiyǔ shí nánmiǎn huì yǒu yīxiē wùhuì.
    When you first start speaking a foreign language, there are inevitably going to be some misunderstandings.
  • 第一次坐飞机出国难免会有点兴奋。
    Dì-yī cì zuò fēijī chūguó nánmiǎn huì yǒudiǎn xīngfèn.

    Gāng kāishǐ gōngzuò, jīngyàn bù duō, nánmiǎn huì chūcuò.
    When you first start working, you will inevitably make mistakes because you don't have much experience.
  • 这是我第一次表演难免有一些紧张。
    Zhè shì wǒ dì-yī cì biǎoyǎn nánmiǎn yǒu yīxiē jǐnzhāng.
    This is my first time performing, so I can't help but feel a little nervous.
