Expressing "as" or "in the role of" with 作为

作为 is used before a noun or noun phrase to indicate someone's role, identity, or function, similar to English "as" or "in the capacity of".

It can also be used as a verb meaning "to regard (something/someone) as", often followed by a noun in 把 structures or with 是...的 framing.

Structure

Subject + 作为 + Noun (+ Verb/Phrase)
Indicates the role or capacity in which someone acts.
把 + Noun + 作为 + Noun
Used to mean "to regard/take X as Y".

  • 作为一名老师,非常有耐心。
    Tā zuò wéi yì míng lǎo shī, fēi cháng yǒu nài xīn.
    As a teacher, he is very patient.
  • 作为公司的经理,她每天工作很忙。
    Zuò wéi gōng sī de jīng lǐ, tā měi tiān gōng zuò hěn máng.
    As the manager of the company, she is busy every day.
  • 他把帮助别人作为自己的责任。
    Tā bǎ bāng zhù bié rén zuò wéi zì jǐ de zé rèn.
    He regards helping others as his responsibility.
  • 作为学生,我们应该努力学习。
    Zuò wéi xué shēng, wǒ men yīng gāi nǔ lì xué xí.
    As students, we should study hard.
  • 大家把他作为学习的榜样。
    Dà jiā bǎ tā zuò wéi xué xí de bǎng yàng.
    Everyone takes him as a role model for learning.
