Emphasizing a negation with 并

Use 并 before 不 or 没(有) to emphasize a negation, often translating as 'at all' or 'really not.' It commonly appears in a contrasting clause to correct an assumption. Note that 并 can emphasize both verb and adjective negations with 不.

Structure

Subj. + 并 + 不 + Verb / Adj.
Can also be used with adjectives.
Subj. + 并 + 没(有) + Verb

Examples

  • 在中国创业容易,有很多的挑战。
    Zài Zhōngguó chuàngyè bìng bù róngyì, yǒu hěn duō de tiǎozhàn.
    In China, starting a business really isn't easy. There are a lot of challenges.
  • 她结婚五年了,也生了一个孩子,但她爱她丈夫。
    Tā jiéhūn wǔ nián le, yě shēng le yī gè háizi, dàn tā bìng bù ài tā zhàngfu.
    She's been married for five years and she has a baby, but she doesn't love her husband at all.
  • 你这样做其实没有解决客户的问题。
    Nǐ zhèyàng zuò qíshí bìng méiyǒu jiějué kèhù de wèntí.
    What you did didn't actually solve our clients' problems at all.
  • 知道你昨天给我打电话了。
    Wǒ bìng bù zhīdào nǐ zuótiān gěi wǒ dǎ diànhuà le.
    I didn't know at all that you called me yesterday.
  • 你送的礼物很贵,但是我喜欢。
    Nǐ sòng de lǐwù hěn guì, dànshì wǒ bìng bù xǐhuan.
    The gift you gave was very expensive, but I didn't like it at all.
