Affirmative-negative question

To ask a yes/no question, repeat the verb with 不 in between, meaning 'is it or isn't it?'. For two-syllable verbs, it's common to only repeat the first syllable (e.g., 喜欢 → 喜不喜欢), though the full verb can also be repeated.

Structure

Verb + 不 + Verb
For disyllabic verbs, you can repeat only the first syllable (e.g. 喜不喜欢)

  • 是不是？
    Shì bu shì ?
    Is it (or not)?
  • 他们来不来？
    Tāmen lái bu lái ?
    Are they going to come or not?
  • 你想不想我？
    Nǐ xiǎng bu xiǎng wǒ?
    Do you or do you not miss me?
  • 我们要去酒吧，你去不去？
    Wǒmen yào qù jiǔbā, nǐ qù bu qù ?
    We are going to the bar. Do you want to go?
  • 我去买咖啡，你要不要？
    Wǒ qù mǎi kāfēi, nǐ yào bu yào ?
    I'm going to buy coffee. Do you want some?
