Definition
鸢 is a bound form (b.f.) that refers to a bird of prey, such as the black kite or a hawk. It is rarely used alone in modern Chinese; you will most often encounter it in compound words like 纸鸢 (zhǐ yuān, paper kite – the flying toy, not to be confused with 风筝) and 鸢尾 (yuān wěi, iris, literally 'kite-tail'). If you see 'kite' in translation, note that the toy kite is 风筝 (fēng zheng), not 鸢.
