Definition
魂魄 is a culturally layered term from Chinese folk religion and philosophy. 魂 (hún) is the ethereal, heavenly soul that leaves the body at death and can become a ghost; 魄 (pò) is the earthly, corporeal soul tied to the physical body and its animal instincts. In modern usage, 魂魄 often refers to the human soul or spirit as a whole, especially in supernatural or literary contexts — it carries more gravitas than 灵魂.
