馒头 (mántou) is a plain, leavened steamed bun with no filling — unlike 包子 (bāozi), which has a savory or sweet filling. It is also different from 面包 (miànbāo, bread), which is baked, not steamed, and often sweeter. 馒头 is a staple food in northern China, eaten plain or with dishes.
