Definition
餐厅 (cāntīng) is the most common, neutral word for a restaurant or dining hall — it can be any place where meals are served, from a casual eatery to a school cafeteria. Unlike 饭店 (fàndiàn) or 酒店 (jiǔdiàn), which can also mean 'hotel', 餐厅 is purely a dining venue. 饭馆 (fànguǎn) is more casual, and 食堂 (shítáng) specifically means an institutional cafeteria.
