领路 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to lead the way'. The verb 领 can separate from the object 路, allowing you to insert measure words, duration, or aspect markers between them — for example 领过一次路 ('led the way once'). You cannot place the person you are leading directly after 领路; instead, use the pattern 给 + person + 领路 ('lead the way for someone').
