院士 (yuàn shì) is a formal title for a member of an academy of sciences or engineering — an 'academician'. It is not a degree like 博士 (PhD), nor a general term like 学者 (scholar). It specifically refers to someone elected to a national or institutional academy for lifetime achievement in research.
