Definition
阅 is a bound form (束缚语素) that appears as the first element in compounds related to reading, reviewing, and experiencing. It cannot stand alone as a word—you'll find it in 阅读 (to read), 阅览 (to read through), 阅历 (life experience), and 检阅 (to inspect). In each compound, the second character specifies the type of activity or object.
