Definition
闹翻 is a resultative verb (动结式) where 闹 (make a scene, quarrel) combines with 翻 (overturn → completely) to mean 'to have a serious falling-out that breaks the relationship'. It's colloquial and usually takes a 跟-phrase for the person you fall out with: 跟某人闹翻. The compound is generally used as a whole (闹翻了, 闹翻了脸), not split, though aspect markers like 了 can attach: 闹翻了.
