Definition
锦 (jǐn) is a bound morpheme – it never stands alone in modern Chinese, only appears inside two‑character compounds. Its literal meaning is 'brocade', a richly figured silk fabric, and by extension it conveys the idea of 'something splendid, beautiful, or glorious' (e.g. 锦绣 'as beautiful as brocade and embroidery', 锦上添花 'to add flowers to brocade – to make what is already good even better'). You'll also see it in words for trophies or prizes (锦标 'championship') and in poetic descriptions of scenery.
