铁人 literally means 'iron man'. It describes a person of extraordinary physical or moral strength. It is most commonly associated with the Ironman triathlon (铁人三项) and with Wang Jinxi (王进喜), the iconic model worker from China's Daqing oil field who was nicknamed '铁人' for his grit and determination.
