Definition
金门 (Jīn mén) refers to two distinct but historically related places: the Kinmen/Quemoy islands (officially part of Taiwan's Fujian Province, but near Xiamen) and a small county-level division in Quanzhou, Fujian, mainland China. Depending on context, it can refer to the Taiwan-controlled islands (often just called Kinmen) or the mainland county (Jinmen County). The name literally means 'golden gate'. Because the political status is sensitive, you may hear different claims depending on the speaker's background.
