Definition
重大 (zhòng dà) means 'major, significant' and emphasizes the weight and seriousness of an issue, decision, or consequence — it's stronger and more formal than 重要 (zhòng yào 'important'). Unlike 伟大 (wěi dà 'great, grand'), which is used for admirable achievements or people, 重大 focuses on the gravity of the matter itself.
