Definition
鄙 is a bound form (b.f.) that appears mainly in formal or written Chinese compounds. It has three common uses: (1) in words like 卑鄙 (bēibǐ, 'despicable') to mean 'vulgar, mean'; (2) as a humble prefix in self-reference, e.g. 鄙人 (bǐrén, 'my humble self'); (3) in 鄙视 (bǐshì, 'to despise') conveying scorn. It can also appear in 边鄙 (biānbǐ, 'remote border area'), but this is less frequent. Because 鄙 is not a free-standing word, you will always see it inside a compound.
