遥远 (yáo yuǎn) means 'distant, remote' and often carries a poetic or emotional sense of great separation (e.g., a distant dream or faraway place). It is stronger and more evocative than the basic 远 (yuǎn, 'far'), which is used for everyday distances. For geographical remoteness from civilization, use 偏远 (piān yuǎn) or 边远 (biān yuǎn) instead.
