通货 is a formal economic term for 'currency' in the sense of the total money supply circulating in an economy. It appears in compound terms like 通货膨胀 ('inflation', literally 'currency expansion') and 通货紧缩 ('deflation'). It is not used for physical banknotes or coins in daily life — for that, use 货币 or 钱.
