进进 is the reduplicated form of the verb 进 (to enter/to advance). In Chinese, reduplicating a single-syllable verb softens the action, conveying a short, casual attempt or a slight movement — like 'to move in a bit' or 'to make a little progress' in a figurative sense (e.g. work, studies). It follows the same pattern as 看看, 说说, and 走走. The reduplicated form is not separable; it functions as a single verb.
