Definition
进士 was the highest academic degree in imperial China's civil service examination system, awarded to scholars who passed the final palace examination (殿试). Earning the title was extremely prestigious and typically led to a high-ranking government position. The term is historical — it no longer exists in modern China — but appears frequently in classical literature, historical dramas, and discussions of traditional Chinese culture.
