Definition
返工 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to redo poorly done work'. It splits when aspect markers (了, 过) or measure words (一次, 一遍) are inserted between 返 and 工 — for example, 返了一次工 ('redid it once'). You cannot put an object after 返工 directly; instead, specify the task separately.
