边 (biān) can mean 'side' or 'edge' by itself, but at HSK1 it's most often added after 上/下/左/右 to show location (e.g., 上边 'above'). 旁边 (páng biān) is a separate word meaning 'the side of something' (e.g., 桌子旁边 'beside the table').
