Definition
边城 refers to a 'border town' or 'frontier town' — a settlement located near a national or regional border. The word is also the title of a famous 1934 novella by Shen Congwen (沈从文), set in a remote town on the border of Hunan and Guizhou provinces, which has given the term strong literary and cultural associations in Chinese. When used in everyday speech, it simply means a town at the frontier.
