Definition
辟 (bì) is a written-bound form (黏着语素) that never stands alone. It appears in a handful of literary compounds with distinct meanings, the most common being 复辟 (to restore a monarch or old order), 辟邪 (to ward off evil spirits), and 辟谷 (to abstain from grain, a Taoist fasting practice). Note that the same character has a different pronunciation (pì) used in words like 开辟 and 辟谣.
