Definition
转业 is a separable verb (离合词) that originally referred to military personnel being transferred to civilian work after discharge. In modern usage, it has broadened to mean 'changing one's career' or 'switching professions' in a general sense. The verb 转 splits from the noun 业 when inserting measure words or modifiers, e.g., 转了一次业 ('changed career once').
