Definition
踵 is a bound form (b.f.) that literally means 'heel'. In classical and formal contexts, it extends metaphorically to mean 'to follow closely' (as in 接踵而至 'to come one after another'), 'to attend in person' (e.g. 踵门求见 'to go personally to someone's door to seek an audience'), or 'to carry on / inherit' (e.g. 踵事增华 'to improve upon an earlier work'). It never appears alone as a free word; you will always find it as a component in two-character compounds.
