Definition
距离 (jù lí) is both a noun ('distance') and a verb ('to be apart from'). As a verb, it is more formal than the everyday 离 (lí) and is used for measured distances; 距 (jù) is even more formal (common in math). 远离 (yuǎn lí) adds the sense of 'keeping away', and 隔 (gé) emphasizes 'separated by' an interval.
