跑车在现代汉语中最常见的意思是“sports car”（高性能轿车），通常指双门、低底盘、速度快的豪华汽车。在特定行业中，它也可以指“racing bike”（赛车用的自行车），但这一用法不如“赛车”普遍。此外，还有一些非常专业的铁路或煤矿术语用法（如伐木场运木头的拖车、火车乘务员上班、煤矿吊车意外下滑），但这些在日常对话中极少出现，通常只在特定技术文献中遇到。
