Definition
越级 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to bypass a level or rank'. You can separate 越 and 级 to insert a measure word or other elements — for example, 越了一级 ('skipped one level'). It commonly appears in two contexts: (1) in a workplace or organization, going over your immediate superior's head to report to a higher-up, and (2) in education, skipping a grade. The object of 越级 is usually implied as the level being bypassed, not a person.
