Definition
起义 (qǐ yì) means 'to rise up in revolt' or 'an uprising', but in Chinese it carries a strongly positive connotation — it's used for righteous rebellions by oppressed people (e.g. peasant uprisings) rather than for mere coups or riots. As a verb it's often used with 了: 起义了. As a noun it can be modified by 一场, 一次, or 的: 一次起义.
