Definition
走失 is a separable verb (离合词, r.v.) that primarily means 'to get lost' or 'to go missing' — most often used for people or animals wandering away and becoming lost. It can also refer to objects being lost or food/flavors losing their original quality. When used with a duration, measure word, or result, the syllables 走 and 失 can split: e.g. 走失了 ('got lost'), 走过一次失 ('went missing once' — less common; normally you'd say 走失过一次 with 过 after 失, but the separation is between 走 and 失 with 了/过/补语). In everyday use, 走失 is often kept together as a compound verb.
