Definition
谢 is primarily the verb for 'to thank', used in 谢谢 (thank you) and many compound structures. It also has a literary sense of 'to wither' (flowers, leaves) and a formal sense of 'to decline politely' (invitations, gifts). The 'apologize' sense appears in set phrases like 谢罪, but it is much less common than 道歉.
