Definition
诠 is a bound morpheme (不成词语素) that cannot stand alone as a word. It appears in compound words where it contributes the meaning 'to explain, to interpret, to annotate'. The most common compound is 诠释 (quánshì, 'to interpret, to expound'), but you also see it in 诠注 (quánzhù, 'to annotate') and 诠次 (quáncì, 'to arrange and edit'). When you encounter 诠 in a text, it almost always pairs with another character to form a two-syllable verb.
