Definition
诚 is a bound morpheme that appears as the first or second syllable in common compound words. It contributes two main sense groups: an adjective-like notion of honesty and sincerity (in 诚实, 真诚, 诚心), and an adverb-like meaning of truly or indeed (in 诚然, 诚有此事). You cannot use 诚 as a standalone word in modern Chinese; it always needs another character to complete the meaning.
