Definition
记 (jì) means both 'to memorize' (actively learning) and 'to write down' (recording). It differs from 记得 (jì de), which means 'to remember' as in passively recalling—记得 does not imply deliberate memorization. It also contrasts with 背 (bèi), which specifically means 'to recite from memory' (e.g., a poem by heart).
