Definition
解放 (jiěfàng) means 'to liberate, to emancipate' — it refers to freeing a group, society, or country from oppression, or freeing one's thinking from old constraints. Unlike 释放 (shìfàng), which is used for physically releasing a person/animal or discharging a substance, 解放 has a broader social/political scope. 解 (jiě) is a more general verb for untying or solving, not typically used for liberation movements.
