Definition
观音 (Guānyīn) is the Chinese name for the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, the 'Goddess of Mercy' in East Asian Buddhism. She is one of the most widely venerated figures in Chinese folk religion and Buddhism, often depicted as a compassionate female deity who hears the cries of the suffering. The name literally means 'observing the sounds (of the world)'.
