Definition
血红素 (xuè hóng sù) refers to the iron-containing compound heme that forms the non-protein part of hemoglobin. It gives blood its red color and is responsible for oxygen transport at the molecular level. Note: 血红素 is not the same as 血红蛋白 (xuè hóng dàn bái 'hemoglobin'); 血红素 is the heme group within hemoglobin.
