Definition
虚构 means to fabricate or make up something that is not real, often used for stories, characters, or plots in creative works. It is more neutral and literary than 编造 (biān zào), which implies a deliberate lie or excuse, and unlike 造 or 编, it does not mean 'to build' or 'to weave' in a physical sense.
