著称 means 'to be widely known/famous for' and always pairs with 以 (yǐ) to introduce the reason for fame. It is more formal and written than 称为/称作 (which simply mean 'to be called'), and unlike 号称 (which can imply exaggeration), 著称 is neutral and factual. 驰名 is a close synonym but is used more for brands and places.
