草原 (cǎo yuán) refers to a vast, natural grassland or prairie, like the steppes of Inner Mongolia. It is larger and more wild than 草地 (cǎo dì), which means a lawn or meadow. Unlike 平原 (píng yuán, flat land), 草原 is specifically covered with grass.
