英雄 (yīngxióng) refers to a hero — someone admired for courage, noble qualities, or great achievements. 主人公 (zhǔrén gōng) is the main character of a story, who may or may not be heroic. Use 英雄 for real-life or legendary heroes; use 主人公 for the central figure in a book, film, or play.
