自治 combines 自 (self) and 治 (govern/rule). It has two main senses: (1) political autonomy or self-government, as in regional autonomy or autonomous organizations; (2) personal self-discipline, the ability to regulate one's own behavior. As a verb (less common), it means to self-govern or exercise autonomy. It is used in formal and academic contexts.
